Hamerkop (Scopus umbretta)

Gouache on toned paper.

The Afrikaans word 'hamerkop' stands for 'hammer-head'. This bird lives in Afrika to the South from the Equator. It is a medium-sized wading bird and eats mostly amphibians and small fishes. The hamerkop builds it's nest in the fork of a tree most of the time. The nest is huge: it can hold the weight of an adult human as well.
