Von der Decken’s hornbill (Tockus deckeni)

This small-sized hornbill lives in East Africa. The Von der Decken’s hornbill is omnivorous, eating a wide variety of foods. The male and female look different: the female has a black beak, the male has a reddish-orange beak with a dark edge on it.
I painted this bird in a relatively small size: it’s only about 15 cm by 12 cm (5.9 inches by 4.7 inches). The challenge was to balance the size and the level of details. Surprisingly, the gouache took it really well: after the opaque layers, I managed to work with a few transparent layers where I wanted to blend the paint more.
